Works! The logo is now a PNG graphic which allows for
semi-transparency. So this is solved :-) .

Ah, cool. True, GIF does not support alpha-transparency (no alpha 
channels). Transparency is used for a single color, thus a pixel can 
only be transparent or not. PNG is the right choice.
