Typical slashdot non-news. My understanding is that the GFDL
is currently only regarded as free software in a limited
number of cases. That is equally true of the FSF's own Free
Software Definition. They do not think that manuals should be
subject to the same requirements as software.
"They" means: the FSF. Debian treats manuals as "software", while
the FSF does not. In this regard, Debian seems to be much closer
to Oekonux than the FSF.
The only new development is another attempt by Debian
developers to resolve this problem.
...by preparing to move GNU manuals with irremovable propaganda
attached to the 'non-free' section which is not officially a
part of Debian. This would not be a big threat towards the users
(as they could put 'non-free' into their sources.list), but a
bit insulting and unthankful towards the FSF. ;o)
In parallel, there is also a discussion that Debian might
deprecate the use of the GFDL in the future, as it is not GPL
compatible.
I can't follow the whole discussion -- there are simply too much
messages.
