Call for Contributions
dear all!
I have announced a section in Herbert Arlts upcoming winter conference
"Innovations and Reproductions in Societies and Cultures" in December
2005. I like the theme of this conference which is a direct follow-up to
the recent "Unifying aspects of culture" (TUAC) This is the time when I
feel it would be good to have many people from the lists above joining in
Vienna. We will hold our workshop in Hotel Karolinenhof or nearby and I
hope that I can prepare an exciting and hospitable environment for as many
people as possible at our small "Global Village Forum". I publish this
early so we can share thoughts on how to organize support, unfortunately
the conference does not support speakers traveling or accomodation costs.

Das Open Source Dorf - The Open Source Village

ABSTRACT:
Ziel dieser Sektion ist es, eine Fülle von transkulturellen
Kooperationsprozessen sichtbar zu machen, die über die elektronischen
Medien möglich und teilweise auch schon wirklich geworden sind - aber in
Zukunft sicher überragende Bedeutung gewinnen werden. Es geht um solche
Kooperationsformen, in denen der Austausch und das Zusammentragen von Know
How, Modellen und Algorithmen für autonome und dezentrale
Produktionsprozesse im Mittelpunkt steht. Wir laden dazu vor allem
Menschen aus peripheren, isolierten und ländlichen Gebieten ein, damit sie
thematisieren, was durch das Teilen des Wissens mit Menschen in ähnlichen
Umständen erzielt werden kann oder erzielt werden sollte. Dabei stehen
zunächst 2 vorbereitende Fragen im Raum:
? Wie kann die Entwicklung des elektronischen Raumes der Materialisierung
von solchen positiven Innovationen und der Fähigkeit zur freien und
ungehinderten Reproduktion derselben dienlich gemacht werden? Wie sehr
gibt uns das sehr erfolgreiche Modell der quelloffenen und freien Software
("Open Source") ein Paradigma dafür, das an die Stelle des patentierten
und proprietären Wissens einen Allgemeinbesitz an Wissen herstellt?
? Wie kann man sich den Prozeß der gemeinsamen Konstruktion und Innovation
konkret vorstellen, wenn etwa von synchroner Telekooperation die Rede ist?
Und wie materialisieren wir die Produkte unserer geistigen Arbeit über die
flexible dezentrale Automation? Haben wir einerseits die überhaupt
Entwurfssprachen für solche kooperativen Prozesse, und haben wir
andererseits tatsächlich eine Technologieentwicklung und Produktpolitik,
die die technologisch längst möglich gewordenen kleinen flexiblen
Fabrikationseinheiten realisiert?
Und wenn wir eine positive Antwort auf die ersten beiden Fragen finden:
Ist die auf dieser Basis erwachsende kooperative Kraft stark genug, der
derzeit dominierenden neofeudalen Muster-Monopol-Industrie, die ihren
Reichtum zunehmend nicht mehr aus direkter Produktion, sondern aus der
rechtlich abgesicherten Kontrolle über die Reproduktion der
"Kopiervorlagen" bezieht, ein alternatives Modell entgegenzusetzen?
Wir müssen also einen Blick auf den Stand einer Bewegung werfen, welche
als "Creative Commons" von sich reden macht.
Dann können wir vielleicht auch daran denken, uns mit Regierungen und
Industrien zusammenzutun, die an die Grenzen des herrschenden ökonomischen
Systems und an seine fundamentale Nichtnachhaltigkeit gestoßen sind. Dann
kann vielleicht auch ein neuer Sozialvertrag entstehen, dessen Ausprägung
im einzelnen Gegenstand der Fragestellung ist. Dann kann auch die
Nützlichkeit und Relevanz der Behauptung geprüft werden, daß das Dorf als
Lebensform durch die Kombination lokalen Ressourcenreichtums und globalen
Supports eine Renaissance vor sich hat. Und wenn diese Frage mit ja
beantwortet wird, wäre es natürlich höchst reizvoll, sich diese Globalen
Dörfer des 21. Jahrhunderts genauer vorzustellen. Und zuletzt zu entdecken
daß es einige davon schon gibt.

ABSTRACT:
The goal of this section is to give room to a lot of transcultural
processes of cooperation - namely, with the means of electronic media that
enable people all over the world to improve and strengthen their local
circumstance and duality of life by pooling know how, models, algorithms
for autonomous use. We invite especially people from peripheral, isolated
and rural areas to show what they could achieve or would like to achieve
by sharing knowledge with people in similar circumstances.
? How do we combine the development of cyberspace with the materialization
of positive innovation and with the ability of free and unhindered
reproduction? How do we link up as communities locally and globally? How
much does the very successful Open Source Model of software development
help?
? How do we construct and innovate together with synchronous
telecooperation, and how do we materialize the products of our mental work
as endlessly reproducible products of decentralized flexible automation?
Design languages are equally needed as small, decentralized fabrication
units, but do we really possess these tools?
If we find an answer to the first two questions: Will the force emerging
on this base be strong enough to challenge the current dominant
neo-feudalist economy, which derives its wealth from its ever increasing
control of global property reproduction rights of any kind? A look at the
state of the creative commons as a sphere of free innovation and
reproduction will be needed.
Can we even team up with governments and industries, when we (and they)
realize that the current economic system is highly unsustainable? And if
so - what will be the new social covenant?
Is it useful and helpful to say that the village faces unexpected
retrieval and renaissance as a place of local cooperation with global
support? And if yes: what will those Global Villages of the 21st century
look like? Are there possibly some already in existence?
