I don't know whether this has been mentioned before here. Anyway.
I found

where there are a couple of completed and on-going studies about the
Engagement in Open Source Projects. Seems to me like being very
interesting for our questions about the reality of Free Software
projects. The results of the latest one shall be published under a CC
license.
