you are right, all these contradictory tendencies are happening at the same time, and to complicate matters, even those you describe are partly a response to our own interests and desires ...
so, how can we make it work for us ... that's the question,

is making the system of legal and technological restraints increasingly
stronger; from total surveillance, to dna databases of the population...
What can be known, will be known; and not just by individuals, but also
by the state and business.
