Re: [ox-en] Re: [p2pf] Launch of P2P Research Group

Hi all

Not sure if this message will bounce off the p2p lists?

Aside from the relationship to academia - Ryan said that traditional academia is quite a closed system - its true but its not just an elitism thing - if you are credentialed (by an institution) and published (in academic journals) it does indicate a level of commitment / rigour / going through the right hoops etc - so it is not obvious but hey why not try to have a rapprochement..

Now, I had not commented on this before because I am not sure what p2p research actually means:
- is it research on peer production [process / philosophy / groups / whatever] or
- is it research that is peer produced?

In the first case I would be interested to take part as an academic setting is as good as any to 'spread the good word' about P2P
In the second case it is more problematic for me as my own research is following routes that are too personal and idiosyncratic to be happily cross-fertilised by others
I am interested in developing P2P ideas with others and disseminating them but is a conference the most efficient venue / format for this as opposed to workshops? texts? media? Just throwing this out real quick - and while I'm on my soapbox: what is 'action research'?

Hi Ryan,

I don't think any social or political change project can bypass
altogetherall institutions, it needs to work both within and
without. This being said,
while aiming for funding obviously demands playing by some
rules, I think
that for all participants who believe in the P2P ethos, no
research project
can or should be exclusive to academic researchers. In my view,
the new
group should also be able to assist non-academic researchers.

Perhaps, we could write a manifesto of sorts, that would serve
as the
'constitution' of the group, which would specific this,

Would you be interested in taking the lead in writing this?

I applaud this initiative and bravo to those offering the

reinforcement than rejection.

Research in an academic sense is not p2p, hasn't been, and
never will be.
I would not exclude it, I just would feed it by giving it
additional free
assets of prestige and focus without their earning those
resources in open
(truly open) communities.
