UN open source policy weakened by lobbyists
The United Nation's World Summit on the Information Society, due to
take place with 50 world leaders in December, was to have endorsed
open source software as a measure to help bridge the digital divide.
The August draft of the WSIS Action Plan even proposed the creation
of a 'Programmers Without Frontiers' organisation to assist
developing countries. But the proprietary software firms leaned hard
on the US and EU delegations, and now the proposals have been been
scaled back.
