Google ads only can feed a very low minority of projects, it cannot be seen 
as a support infrastructure for most of the free content available,
adsense is only one option. there are a couple of sites like metacafe outthere specifically for content: http://www.metacafe.com/producercentral/ where creators get paid if people watch their video (current rate there is 100 dollar for 20 000 views). last year they paid out 1 million to creators which, i think, is not so bad for a start up.
