Re: [ox-en] On Bits and Pieces * How Information and Matter Are Similar

Hi StefanMn,

some comments on your interesting slides:

On 2010-03-25 17:36, Stefan Merten wrote:
* Rivalness: If I use a good you can't use it any more
* Usually: Distinction between rival and non-rival goods
  * An *apple* is considered rival

If no one eats the apple, the good is not rival.

  * *Streets* are considered non-rival
  * But what about a *traffic jam*?

If there is a lot of cars or a traffic jam, then the good becomes rival.

These two examples show: Not the good *as such* is non-/rival, but the
good in relation to its usage.

* My claim: Rivalness is not a feature of the good

True.

  * Instead: *Rivalness* depends on the *availability*

No, rivalness depends on usage.

However, increasing availability can be a measure to deal with rivalry.

  * *Availability* is a result of the *production process*

... and, even more important, a result of the social form of production.

Often capitalism produces more goods then can be bought, but they are
not available for those who can't buy them although they need them.

Ciao,
Stefan
