And here is included the picture on white. It would be great if one
more knowledgable with Gimp etc. than me could turn white into
transparency.

This is the trick:
- switch to RGB colors (Image / Mode=RGB)
- select Tools / Selection Tools / By Color Select (threshold 15 is ok)
- click on white area
- select Colors / Color to Alpha
- select white color (should already be selected), OK
- switch to Indexed Colors (Image / Mode=Indexed)
- save the image, done
