Let me know if stuff like this is ontopic ...
It is certainly more ontopic than utopic is :-)
Actually, it is very interesting. A pastime hobbies of
mine from my youth is live role-playing. Live RPG has
grown into a massive movement in Scandinavia, and
after Seattle it has rapidly become politicised,
merging with Reclaim the Streets and protest theatres.
It is distantly connected to MUD by overlapping
subculture, but more interestingly, events are
organised in ways resembling to hacking in more ways
than I can list here and now (self organised, strong
community, embryo at commodification and resulting
conflict).
Anyway, this suggests that aspects of the
hacker-phenomena is mushrooming unnoticeable all over
the terrain in places not even we would be looking
for. As Reclaim the Streets website proclaims
somewhere: A post-modern capitalism organised around
cultural commodities can be challenged by
disconnecting culture/expressions from capitalist
circulation.
