Re: [ox-en] search engine and foss

Hi Johan, are you aware of the Antigoras essay by Jaron Lanier, published by the Cato Institute, and on my own hypothesis of netarchical capitalists?

(see http://www.p2pfoundation.net/index.php/Netarchical_Capitalism but also different entries on the blog)

Current trends undermine both the dominance of cognitive capitalism (because the open models undermine IP monopolies) and of the vectoralists (because of the distributed nature of post-media), but, they create a new club of enablers/exploiters of participatory platforms who lives off the wisdom of crowds.

They have a dual nature: since they live off the participatory processes, they have to suppot and enable them, and in this differ from the interests of the 2 previous dominant groups; but as private companies they are geared to world domination strategies and new monopoly formation. Counter-strategies could be dual: 1) within the platforms, revenue-sharing is an issue, but few seem motivated by it;2) when they err on the profit side, protest campaigns can be effective since they rely on the community even more than traditional companies; 3) the threat of open source and community-run plaftorms

In case of google, strategy 3 might entail support for intiatives such as Majestic-12 (no, not a ufo thing but a distributed search engine)

But it is not going to be easy, because in this case, foss alternatives are ot vying with proprietary companies, but with netarchists which have already themselves included manu foss strategies.

  Michel

Lately I have come across many concerns that Google is the next top-dog
after Microsoft. By holding on to the search-engine Google is turning
value out of all the free content on the Web. Free, open or closed
source makes little difference to them. At the same time they are
gathering huge amount of information on all the inquiries made on
Google, of both financial and state-repressive interest. Have the list
any estimates on the chances dealing with them the Foss way?
