i read here that wikipedia could have made 300million accepting

or even better give the money directly to poor people or buy food for
villages or whatever 300 million can do.

This is an excellent idea. OTOH, it may be argued that advertising is a
pain in the eye to users, and maybe that's why Wales rejected the offer.
Then again, considering that Bomis Inc. is an internet advertising company,
one may wonder about other motives (e.g. that Google ads would compete
with the kind of behind-the-scenes advertising that Wales envisions)...

who made the decision not to take
the money? personally, i find it quite irrational (im tempted to use
another word) to reject 300 million "out of principle". even worse, there
was no recourse to the people who make up wikipedia and no serious
discussion on this and it seems that this decison was made by one or only
a few people.

Indeed, this illustrates some of the problems arising from monarchistic
leadership. Alright so Linus joked about being a "benevolent dictator",
but sometimes dictatorships become rather non-funny, especially if the
citizens are made to believe it's a democracy... (any similarities with
Diebold machines and Patriot Act tricks would be merely accidental ;-} )
...and what if Wales is run over by a bus tomorrow?

Cheers,
Chris
