You mean it creates no obligations for the consumers, I agree.
What I meant referred to the internal cooperation.
As for the gift, it helps to distinguish gift-based exchange, which requires a non-calculated return but creates obligations of a return somehow; and generalized non-reciprocal exchange, which is not based on a specific expectation of personal return, but may require some sense that the project as a whole is creating a particular dynamic (some peer production is 'contigent' of continued cooperation by unspecified others)
